Complaints against Peak Fitness - Charlotte area

Peak Fitness is notorious for locking people into contracts and making them jump through hoops to cancel. Not only that, the management is almost impossible to get in touch with. And to top it all off, Peak Fitness has managed to generate 63 complaints from the Better Business Bureau including a pending lawsuit from the Attorney General of North Carolina.

Here are some more interesting facts about Peak Fitness:

Lawsuit filed against Peak Fitness by the Attorney General of North Carolina:"According to the complaint, Peak refused to release members of Arboretum Women-Only Health Club... from their contracts or refund their money after the company closed Arboretum."

Peak Fitness agrees to alter misleading ads after lawsuit (Note: this is a seperate lawsuit from the one mentioned above.):
"Peak Fitness, a North Carolina chain that is facing a lawsuit from the state Attorney General’s Office, agreed Wednesday to stop running misleading advertisements and to set aside money to cover future refunds."

More from the article:
"According to the lawsuit, Peak Fitness, which formerly operated as Beyond Fitness, advertised that members could use 34 locations for $19.99 a month. But fine print in the advertisement states that the price is based on a 24-month membership. Instead of paying $19.99 monthly, members are required to pay $479.76 upfront, the newspaper reported."

"The Attorney General’s Office began investigating Beyond Fitness in 2005 after receiving complaints from unhappy customers. Most of the complaints came after Beyond Fitness took money upfront for memberships for a planned location that never opened, the office said."

Peak Fitness continues to bill customers after billing cycle is complete:
"...But Rhonda says after her contract expired, Peak Fitness continued to charge her credit card until she called the Better Business Bureau for help."

Unsanitary conditions at Peak Fitness:
"Well, the showers were dirty, one of the white plastic shower curtains was actually ripped in half and all the shower curtains had mold on them. I would clean the shower before I used it and obviously started to complain about the filth. Well, the general manager Jason O'Brien took my complaints as a joke. "

And this doesn't represent 1/100th of the complaints and issues I found online regarding Peak Fitness.
